What are the consequences of a poor diet on the general wellbeing?

“You are what you eat”. This might sound like a cliché but, when it comes to general wellbeing, this statement fits perfectly in the scenario. Not just our physical health but mental health and wellbeing are also affected by what we eat. There is a direct relationship between your level of physical activity and the energy you use up from the food you eat. If your food intake is more than your physical activities, this might lead to obesity, which in itself increases your risk of disease.

Physical Consequences of Poor Diet

A poor diet negatively affects our physical health. The key to a long and healthy life is eating right quality food with the right amount. Your eating habits should change as per your age because the body requires different nutrition at a different age.  For example, you don’t need as many calories as you grow old, but you need more of some nutrients like vitamin D and calcium. And as you age, your body might have trouble absorbing certain vitamins B12. A poor diet can impair your daily health and wellbeing and reduce your ability to lead an enjoyable and active life. In the near future, poor nutrition can contribute to stress, tiredness and your capacity to work. It may lead to major health issues like obesity, tooth decay, blood pressure problems, increased cholesterol, heart diseases, diabetes, cancers, depression, poor digestive system and premature death.

Psychological Consequences of Poor Diet

An unhealthy diet may be linked to poor mental health. Poor diet might affect your body structure which may lead to poor body image and low self-esteem. Unhealthy eating habits negatively affect brain function and cause reduced self-esteem as a result of poor concentration, mood swings and confusion. Eating less, for example taking too little calories or carbohydrates, can increase stress because both are important for proper brain function and the production of chemicals such as serotonin. Overeating is also stressful, and can cause heartburn, poor sleep and depressed mood. Increased stress combined with poor diet may increase the chances of Anxiety and Depression.

Importance of Balanced Nutrition

In a nut shell, a balanced diet gives your body the nutrients it needs to function properly. Nutrition is essential for your body and by having good nutrition it will help you maintain a healthy weight, provide your body with required energy, and boost good sleep cycle. Foods that are low in unnecessary fats and sugars and high in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients must be included in your diet.  An easy way to maintain your healthy diet is keeping a food diary. The food diary can help you get a better understanding of what you eat and why you eat it. It can also help your doctor, therapist, or dietitian work with you to make the necessary changes for successful weight management.
